Space Industry Growth

Australian Space Agency

The Australian Space Agency is responsible for whole-of-government coordination of civil space matters and is the primary source of advice to the Australian Government on civil space policy.

Established in July 2018 after a review of Australia’s Space Industry Capability, the Agency has A$41m in funding over 4 years.

The Australian Space Agency helps businesses win a greater share of the global space market.

Space technology and services benefit all Australians. Internationally the space industry is worth US$345 billion each year, but only 0.8% is contributed by the Australian space sector. With new entrants and advanced technology disrupting the space industry, there are significant opportunities to build the sector in Australia. To capitalise on this growth opportunity, the Australian Government established the Australian Space Agency in July 2018.

Airbus: Zephyr Project - Pioneering the Stratosphere

Zephyr is the world’s leading, solar-electric, stratospheric Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).

It will revolutionise defence, humanitarian and environmental missions all over the world.

The first unmanned aircraft of its kind to fly in the stratosphere, Zephyr harnesses the sun’s rays, running exclusively on solar power, above the weather and conventional air traffic.

It is a HAPS: a High Altitude Pseudo Satellite, able to fly for months at a time, combining the persistence of a satellite with the flexibility of a UAV.
